Regarded as “The Birthplace of British Cinema”, the Grade II listed Regent Street Cinema was recently restored and refurbished over a three year period. Winning a competitive tender, LSI Projects worked closely with Carr & Angier Theatre Consultancy to provide the technical requirements of this iconic venue.
A complete solution consisting of Audio, Visual, Lighting and Stage Engineering was required to transform the building into a modern working cinema. Fully project managed from contract award to client handover, with regular coordination meetings between client, design team and contractors being essential to ensure that heritage was fully retained.
The Audio Visual system comprised of a digital projection system with Dolby Surround Sound speaker system for the cinema with additional steerable arrays for speech reinforcement. An Extron control system was installed and programmed, providing user control screens for automatic adjustment of audio, lighting and cinema screen pre-sets.
LSI Project Manager, Coert Van Dorsten, comments “the project was particularly challenging as the venue is steeped in history with listed status. It was very satisfying to see the result of many months of hard work in restoring such a magnificent building and future-proofing it for many years to come”.
A particular challenge for the project was the refurbishment of the venues 16mm and 35mm projectors.
LSI Projects fully managed the restoration, installation and commissioning and on completion old and new formats created a seamless, integrated cinema experience.
The venue is now the only cinema in the country able to screen 16mm, 35mm, Super 8 and 4K formats. Regaining access to many films which had been consigned to the archives for many years.
