A Spotlight on Hertford
BEAM, formerly known as Hertford Theatre, has undergone a remarkable £30 million transformation – reimagined as a vibrant cultural destination at the heart of the town. What was once a local theatre has evolved into a welcoming, multi-purpose venue designed to serve both professional touring productions and grassroots community groups. With a blend of live performance spaces, modernised cinemas and flexible public areas, BEAM breathes new life into Hertford’s creative landscape – offering something for everyone, from school shows and indie film nights to West End-standard productions.
LSI Projects were appointed to design, supply, install, test and commission a full suite of technical systems throughout the redeveloped venue. From the 547-seat Main Theatre and 151-seat Studio Theatre to three purpose-built cinemas and additional community spaces, LSI’s work spanned the full scope of stage lighting, audio, AV and communications.
Key elements included ETC’s lighting ecosystem, DiGiCo mixing consoles, Christie cinema projectors in custom isolation pods and comprehensive video distribution and paging systems. Every system was selected and configured to support a wide range of uses – from live theatre and film screenings to school shows and private hires.
Working within the constraints of the original building presented challenges in space and coordination. LSI collaborated closely with main contractor GPF Lewis and other stakeholders to ensure that all systems were integrated efficiently and sympathetically within the structure. This careful planning allowed the team to deliver powerful, modern infrastructure without compromising the building’s character or flow.
