In the autumn of 2017, Bloomberg opened its new European headquarters in the heart of London – a landmark 1.1 million sq.ft. complex designed by Foster + Partners, housing over 4,000 employees. Spread across two buildings and connected by a five-storey bridge, the site offers stunning views of St. Paul’s Cathedral and sets a new benchmark for innovation in workspace design.
As part of this major relocation, Bloomberg launched a state-of-the-art broadcast studio to serve its global audience. Working alongside system integrator dB Broadcast, LSI Projects were brought on board to deliver a complete lighting infrastructure for the 3,600 sq.ft. studio.
LSI Projects supplied and installed the lighting grid, luminaires and a comprehensive lighting control system. The system was engineered to interface with BNCS, allowing control of the production lighting console via OSC over TCP/IP, while also supporting cue recalls through production automation using MIDI Show Control protocols.
Collaborating closely with New York’s Lighting Design Group, LSI provided a tailored technical solution ensuring that employees with a range of technical skills could easily operate the lighting system across multiple broadcast locations within the building.
The new studio was designed as a dynamic storytelling platform, capable of supporting eight hours of live television and four hours of live radio programming daily. It features a central circular studio enclosed by angled glass panels within the bustling newsroom, surrounded by programmable LED surfaces – including the floor, anchor desk and a series of overhead LED panels – that together create a seamless electronic canvas for graphics and live content.
Beyond the main studio, three additional broadcast points are positioned around the building, offering alternative shots, including live views of London landmarks like St. Paul’s Cathedral. The facility also includes two recording studios, a photography studio and three control rooms, co-ordinating 36 remote cameras located in cities from Frankfurt to Kuala Lumpur.
