Originally opened in 1867, Bristol Beacon has been a landmark for live music in the UK, hosting legendary acts such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and David Bowie.
After an extensive five-year, multi-million-pound renovation, the venue reopened on 30th November 2023, unveiling cutting-edge audio and lighting systems designed, supplied and installed by LSI Projects.
More than just a concert hall, Bristol Beacon has been redesigned as a flexible, multi-space venue, featuring four distinct performance areas: Beacon Hall (2,000-seat main venue), The Lantern (500-capacity standing space), Western Stage (cellar-level performance space), and Bridge House (a multi-use venue).
The venue hosts a diverse range of events, with shows most evenings and live music performances daily—sometimes twice a day. It also accommodates numerous corporate events and is expanding its educational sessions, now taking place in the cellars.
This transformation not only enhances Bristol Beacon’s versatility but also aligns with its commitment to becoming carbon-neutral by 2030, reducing the environmental impact of touring productions.
As Frazer Riches, Technical Manager, explains: “We made the commitment to buy equipment for shows to use, reducing the need for touring productions to truck in the same PA and lighting rigs repeatedly.”
Collaborating with contractors and consultants, LSI was set to modernise the venue’s technical infrastructure while preserving its historical integrity. The result is a high-performance, adaptable space equipped to host a diverse range of events, from large-scale concerts to intimate performances.
LSI Projects’ contribution includes:
“The building has been brought up to modern standards with LED lighting using an ETC backbone, L’Acoustics speakers and a Dante network capable of recording in one room and relaying signals across multiple spaces,” explains Nicholas Broad, Projects Director at LSI.
“Across each venue, the acoustics are fantastic. You can have a big rock concert going on in the main hall whilst a classical concert can be happening in The Lantern at the same time, meaning each space is being used to its optimum.”
Frazer Riches, Technical Manager at Bristol Beacon comments on the collaborative effort between the teams: “LSI were brilliant at facilitating workshops to understand exactly how we wanted the network infrastructure and PA to be laid out and configured. Bearing in mind, this was a very complex installation, yet they were on-site the whole time providing us with that extra level of support.”
“Theatres weren’t new to us, but on a project of this scale, we were slightly nervous,” explains Carl Fernandes, Services Manager at Willmott Dixon. “But from our first meeting with LSI, we knew they would be our partner – they filled us with the utmost confidence and we ultimately maintained a great relationship with them all the way through. It has been a very challenging project and LSI played a key role in ensuring it was completed on time.”
LSI worked closely with the team to overcome challenges posed by the historic building: “Most challenges stemmed from space constraints,” adds Fernandes. “It was crucial to get the electrical runs just right. But as the design evolved, with LSI’s expertise, we were able to maximise the available space and seamlessly integrate modern elements into the historical setting.'”
Joe Allotey, Facilities Manager at Bristol Beacon, highlighted the long-term partnership with LSI: “It’s reassuring to know that LSI will continue to support us beyond the project’s completion.”
A Legacy for the Future
Since its reopening, Bristol Beacon has been praised by artists for its exceptional sound quality and acoustics. Fernandes reflects on the impact of the renovation: “It’s a fantastic venue and the feedback from artists has been amazing—especially regarding the sound and acoustics. It’s been well worth the four-year effort.”
Bristol Beacon’s transformation goes beyond the present, shaping a lasting cultural landmark for generations to come. As Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, concludes: “Bristol Beacon is not a two, three, or even five-year project. It is a 100-year legacy for Bristol; from the main stage to the cellar’s recording studio, it is a venue designed by the people of Bristol, for the future of Bristol.”
